Insulated Glass and "Fogged" Windows
Insulated, double pane or Thermopane glass is two panes of glass separated by a metal spacer. It is found in all modern windows and patio doors. They are replaced as an entire unit.
Insulated Window Glass
Insulated window glass is usually not tempered and is custom ordered to your exact specifications. These units usually take 4 to 7 business days to be made.
Patio Doors
Patio Doors are Tempered Safety Glass and we stock all the standard sizes for prompt installation. Custom sizes of tempered insulated glass are available by special order and usually take two weeks to be manufactured. Tempered safety glass is also required in any window next to a door or any window within 18" of a floor.
Skylights
Skylights are a special form of safety insulated glass with tempered and laminated glass panes. They are commonly ordered in Low-E versions to reduce the amount of heat and fading U.V. rays.
Sunrooms and Greenhouses
Sunrooms and Greenhouses with a glass roof should have Low-E glass to cut down on heat, but there are also better versions of Low-E for these applications that can significantly cut down the solar heat gain and prevent your sunroom from becoming a sauna.
Fogged Windows
Foggy Windows are insulated units where you can see moisture and a haze between the two panes of glass. Tthis happens when the airspace has become saturated with water. A tiny amount of water is always getting through the seal and the glass (particularly here on Cape Cod with our damp mornings, damp winters, fog and sea mist), but there is a desiccant (drying agent) between the glass that absorbs the moisture and keeps the space between the glass dry. This drying agent is in the aluminum spacer between the windows. The thicker the spacer, the more drying agent, and the longer the window will last before it fogs up (this is why there is no warranty on 3/8" insulated units).
Eventually, the drying agent becomes saturated and that is when you see the moisture on the inside and the window looks foggy. At that point the unit has failed and must be replaced.
Warranty On Insulated Glass
Stock Patio Units are warranted for 10 years. All other Insulated Glass is warranted for 5 years. Exceptions to the warranty are: 1) properties within 500 yards of the water; 2) insulated units that are 3/8” thick; and 3) materials are covered under warranty, but labor to replace the unit is not.
